The Lactobacillus gasseri strain occurs naturally in breast milk. These lactobacilli colonize the intestines and genitals of women. Various studies have examined the effect of these lactobacilli on female metabolism, particularly investigating potential positive effects of these microorganisms on weight control. The cited studies suggest that Lactobacillus gasseri may be able to reduce body fat in obesity.1, 2
A Japanese double-blind study in 2011 investigated potential positive effects on weight loss. 210 adults with abdominal obesity participated. They received Lactobacillus gasseri as a dietary supplement for three months. Reductions in body mass index (BMI) and waist and hip circumference were observed. Abdominal fat was reduced by 8.5% in the experimental group. In the control group, there were only minor changes in body weight and body fat. Further research is needed.3
